Discrete Surface Ricci Flow and Optimal Transportation

内容提要:Thistalkintroducestwofundamentaltheoretictoolsingeometricprocessing,surfaceRicciflowandoptimaltransportation.Surfacemappingwillintroducedistortions,whichcanbeclassifiedtoangledistortionandareadistortion.Ricciflowcanproduceangle-preservingmappings,optimalmasstransportationcaninducearea-preservingmappings.SurfaceRicciflowdeformsthesurfaceRiemannianmetricproportionaltothecurrentcurvature,suchthatthecurvatureevolvesaccordingtoadiffusionandreactionprocess,andeventuallythecurvatureconvergestoaconstant.WeformulatethediscretesurfaceRicciflowasavariationalproblem,anduseNewton’smethodfortheconvexoptimization.Furthermore,weprovetheexistenceandtheuniquenessofthesolutiontothediscretesurfaceRicciflow,whichimpliestheclassicalsurfaceuniformizationtheorem.ThemethodscandesignRiemannianmetricsfromprescribedcurvatures.Optimalmasstransportationproducesahomeomorphismwhichmapsoneprobabilitymeasuretotheotherinthemosteconomicalway.OptimaltransportationhasintrinsicrelationtotheMinkowskiprobleminconvexgeometry,andcanbereducedtosolveMonge-Ampereequation.WegiveavariationalapproachtosolvetheMonge-Ampereequation,whichleadstoanovelproofofAlexandrovtheorem.ThemethodcanbeappliedforcomputingWassersteindistancebetweenprobabilitymeasures.报告人简介:DavidGuisanassociateprofessor(withtenure)attheDepartmentofComputerScience,StonyBrookUniversity.HereceivedhisPhDdegreefromtheDepartmentofComputerScience,HarvardUniversityin2003andB.S.degreefromtheTsinghuaUniversity,Beijing,Chinain1995.DavidGu’sresearchfocusesonapplyingmoderngeometryinengineeringandmedicalfields.Withhiscollaborators,Davidsystematicallydevelopsdiscretetheoriesandcomputationalalgorithmsintheinterdisciplinaryfield:ComputationalConformalGeometry,andapplytheminComputerGraphics,ComputerVision,GeometricModeling,GeometricProcessing,NetworkingandMedicalImaging.
Polynomial convergence rate to nonequilibrium steady-state

摘要:InthistalkIwillpresentmyrecentresultabouttheergodicpropertiesofnonequilibriumsteady-state(NESS)forastochasticenergyexchangemodel.Theenergyexchangemodelisnumericallyreducedfromabilliards-likedeterministicparticlesystemthatmodelsthemicroscopicheatconductionina1Dchain.Byusingatechniquecalledtheinducedchainmethod,Iprovedtheexistence,uniqueness,polynomialspeedofconvergencetotheNESS,andpolynomialspeedofmixingforthestochasticenergyexchangemodel.Alloftheseareconsistentwiththenumericalsimulationresultsoftheoriginaldeterministicbilliards-likesystem.
Numerical approximation of partial differential equations involving fractional differential operators

摘要:Inthistalk,weconsiderthenumericalapproximationofpartialdifferentialequations(PDEs)involvingfractionaldifferentialoperators.Inhigherdimensionalspaces,fractionaldifferentialoperatorsaredefinedusingeigenfunctionexpansionsintheboundeddomaincaseortheFouriertransformwhenthedomainisthewholespace.ClassicalPDEtheoriesstillapplytothesetypesofproblemssincethebilinearformsareboundedandcoerciveontheappropriateintermediatespacebetweenL^2andH^1_0.Usingthefiniteelementmethodandaso-calledsincquadraturescheme,wefocusonthefollowingtwotopics:approximatingparabolicequationsinvolvingfractionalpowersofellipticoperatorswhichcomefromeigenfunctionexpansionsandtheapproximationofavariationalproblemonboundeddomaininvolvingfractionaloperatorsdefinedintermsoftheFouriertransform.
A stochastic maximum principle for processes driven by G-Brownian motion and applications to finance

Molecular Geometry and Its Operating System: A New Challenge and Opportunity

摘要:Thegeometryofatomicarrangementunderpinsthestructuralunderstandinginmanyfields.Inbiology,thestructureofbiomoleculesdeterminestheirfunction.Inchemistry,physics,andmaterialsscience,thepropertiesofinorganicmoleculesresultfromthegeometricalarrangementoftheiratoms.However,ageneralframeworkofmathematical/computationaltheoryforthegeometryofatomicarrangementdoesnotexist.Herewepresent``MolecularGeometry(MG)\'\'assuchatheoreticalframeworkand``MGOperatingSystem(MGOS)\'\'whichconsistsofcallablefunctionsbasedontheVoronoidiagramofsphericalatomsthatimplementstheMGtheory.MGfacilitatessimplermodelingofmolecularstructureproblemingeometry-centricprincipleandtheMGOSfunctionscanbeconvenientlyembeddedinapplicationprogramsfortheefficientandaccuratesolutionofgeometricqueriesinvolvingatomicarrangements.MG,accompaniedbyMGOS,willallowresearcherstofocusmoreontheirprimaryresearchissuesbyfreeingthemfromthetime-consuminganderror-pronetasksofdevelopingandimplementinghighlysophisticatedandcomplexgeometryalgorithmsformolecularstructurestudies.Theimpactofmathlibrariesofgeneralpurposehigh-levelprogramminglanguagestoscienceandengineeringisanappropriatemetaphorofthatofMGOS,whichiscurrently,freelyavailableatVoronoiDiagramResearchCenter,totheworldsconsistingofsphericalentitiesincludingatomicarrangements.
